Callaway Gardens Fantasy In Lights Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary
Fantasy In Lights at Callaway Gardens
PINE MOUNTAIN, GA (PRWEB) October 27, 2011
This holiday season marks the 20th anniversary of Fantasy in Lights® — named one of the top 48 events in the world by the chicago Tribune — at Callaway Gardens, a 13,000-acre destination south of Atlanta. Fantasy in Lights features 8 million lights stretching more than five miles, creating 14 larger-than-life holiday scenes. As the most spectacular holiday light and sound show in the South, Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Gardens sets Pine Mountain, Ga., ablaze from November 18 through December 30, 2011. Advance ticket prices range from $ 16 to $ 22 for adults and $ 8 to $ 11 for children, with children 5 and younger always admitted for free.
Visitors experience the light and sound extravaganza on the “Jolly Trolley” or by driving through the lighted scenes in their personal vehicle. The sparkling, animated displays include Snowflake Valley, a winter wonderland filled with enormous snowflakes and thousands of white lights; Magical Christmas Garden with a 24-foot wreath entrance; and Santa’s Workshop, showcasing animated versions of Santa’s elves busy making toys for the big night. Two “don’t miss” scenes are on Robin Lake Beach and are both narrated, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas and The Nativity. They each last about 10 minutes.
Ninety-nine percent of the frames used to create the scenes in Fantasy in Lights are custom designed and built just for Callaway Gardens, taking 3,900 man-hours to install. In keeping with Callaway Gardens’ mission of connecting man and nature, every kilowatt of power used to light up Fantasy In Lights is compensated with “green” power. The first destination in the Southeast to offset 100 percent of its electricity use by purchasing wind power credits.
Families experience the Christmas Village, a 22,000 square-foot indoor, heated area featuring opportunities to visit Santa and other holiday characters. Inside the Village, guests have the opportunity to shop for specialty food items from the Callaway Gardens Country Store®, unique gifts, nostalgic toys from simpler times and an assortment of holiday ornaments. An array of Georgia crafters are on hand making and selling their wares.
The American Bus Association has again selected Fantasy In Lights at Callaway Gardens as a “Top 100 Events in North America” for 2011. Fantasy In Lights also has been recognized numerous times by the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast and by America’s Best and Top Ten as one of the Top Three Light Shows in America.

Bad Economy Turns Renters Into Roommates: Recession Has Renters Tripling Up Instead of Doubling Up to Save Money
Since the recession officially began in Dec 2007 renters have searched increasingly for 3 bedroom apartments over 1 bedroom apartments.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 28, 2009
Faced with uncertain economic times, renters around the nation are saving money on their monthly housing costs by opting to split a 3-bedroom apartment rather than living alone in more expensive 1-bedroom apartments. MyNewPlace, one of the largest online apartment listing sites, recently conducted a survey of internal search data, which showed that the share of searches for 3-bedroom apartments made significant gains at the expense of 1-bedroom apartments since the beginning of 2008.
Based on a sample of nearly 10 million searches for 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments that took place on MyNewPlace.com between January 2008 and June 2009, the percentage of searches for 3-bedroom apartments consistently increased each quarter while searches for 1-bedroom apartments decreased. The share of searches for 2-bedroom apartments meanwhile stayed steady, suggesting that instead of ‘doubling up,’ renters are tripling up for even greater rent savings.
Since monthly rents are often lower per bedroom the more bedrooms an apartment has, the changing search patterns reflect an overall trend of renters looking for more economical housing options without sacrificing ideal locations and amenities.
Top Ten Cities for Roommates Looking to Save on Housing
Where are savvy renters saving money by moving in with roommates? Combining regional search data with average prices for apartments listed on MyNewPlace, MyNewPlace.com put together a list of the top ten cities where renters are saving:
Washington, DC: Not surprisingly, the cities with the highest rents often offer the highest potential for savings. The share of 3-bedroom searches in the area around the nation’s capital has grown by 87%, with renters saving as much as $ 800/month by bunking up–nearly $ 10,000 per year.
Philadelphia: Faced with high housing costs, renters in the City of Brotherly Love are getting friendlier than ever, with searches for 3-bedroom apartments more than doubling, with average savings of around $ 490 per month.
Atlanta: Atlanta saw 1-bedroom searches decline by half and 3-bedroom searches more than double, as eager renters pursued $ 413/month savings by moving in with roommates.
San Jose: Silicon Valley renters sought to mitigate the area’s notoriously expensive rents by finding roommates–at a savings of more than $ 600/month.
chicago: Windy City residents braced against the chilly economic climate by cozying up with roommates, doubling up their 3-bedroom searches, to the tune of $ 560/month savings.
Denver: Renters are tripling up in the Mile High City at some of the highest rates in the country, and saving nearly $ 350/month in the process.
Los Angeles: In the City of Angels, even the beautiful people are moving in together. Three beautiful people under one roof could save more than $ 525 each.
Seattle: 3-bedroom search share increased 113% from January 2008 to June 2009, with savings of up to $ 500/month for each roommate. That’s a lot of cups of coffee.
Las Vegas: Nevadans aren’t gambling when it comes to their housing costs. Las Vegas has seen the highest growth in 3-bedroom searches nationwide, and each roommate could be saving $ 360/month.
Boston & Cambridge: Renters in the Boston area aren’t tripling up at quite the rates of the rest of the cities on our list, but they should be–there’s up $ 880/month to be saved.

IES Abroad and chicago Scholars Launch Chicago Scholars Abroad Initiative to Promote Diversity Among College Students who Study Abroad
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 07, 2011
Two Chicago-based organizations, dedicated to providing higher education opportunities to traditionally underrepresented students (defined as racial/ethnic minorities, financially needy students, first generation, or those having a history of overcoming adversity) have announced the creation of a major new initiative to increase the number of disadvantaged students from the Chicago area participating in college study abroad programs.
IES Abroad, a 61-year-old international education not-for-profit, and Chicago Scholars, which helps high-achieving high school students overcome the barriers to their collegiate access and success, have joined forces to launch the Chicago Scholars Abroad initiative. When fully funded, the initiative will provide scholarship aid of $ 4,000 per student for tuition/fees, plus a $ 1,000 transportation and living stipend, for up to 20 Chicago Scholars students each academic year.
IES Abroad will fund the first three years of the initiative; the first cohort of Chicago Scholars Abroad students is expected to take part in study abroad programs starting in fall 2012. IES Abroad and Chicago Scholars will work cooperatively to build a sustainable scholarship fund, supported by Chicago-area IES Abroad alumni and other donors, to support future Chicago Scholars Abroad students.
In addition to providing students with scholarships to support studying abroad at one of IES Abroad’s 35 locations around the world, the Chicago Scholars Abroad initiative will also include study abroad workshops and peer engagement for high school and college-level Chicago Scholars students and their parents; a customized guide for preparing to study abroad; and opportunities to interact with program donors on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to providing economically challenged students with an opportunity to study abroad in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand or South America, the initiative will support and cultivate a home-grown talent pool of diverse, globally-sophisticated Chicago professionals who can contribute toward strengthening the city’s reputation as an international mecca for business, education, technology, the arts and other interests. Beyond the boundaries of Chicago, the Chicago Scholars Abroad initiative can also help to increase future diversity among the nation’s diplomatic and foreign affairs corps, national security, and commerce and finance industries.
Cultivating a diverse, globally-savvy workforce
Underrepresented students make up nearly 20 percent of all students IES Abroad educates abroad, a 43.9 percent rise in just five years. Enrollment continues to grow as the IES Abroad Initiative to Diversify Education Abroad (IDEA) builds a pipeline of underrepresented students into its study abroad programs.
Through its commitment to provide study abroad opportunities to traditionally underrepresented college students, IES Abroad is partnering with top-tier American colleges and universities to prepare future leaders. These underrepresented students develop critical skills in world languages and intercultural understanding through participation in IES Abroad programs. The skills can help provide competitive advantages as they answer the need for the diverse and globally competent workforce of the present and future.
Chicago Scholars provides a comprehensive five-year mentoring program that supports first generation, low income, and underserved college-bound youth to transition from high school to college, and from college to career. The organization serves more than 800 high-potential scholars from virtually every public, private and parochial high school in Chicago. Over 95 percent of Chicago Scholars graduate from more than 100 colleges and universities around the nation. http://www.chicagoscholars.org
IES Abroad, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2010, is a global, not-for-profit academic consortium offering study abroad programs to more than 5,500 U.S. college students each year who participate in 100 programs at 35 international locations. IES Abroad offers programs in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and South America. http://www.IESAbroad.org
In October of 2010, IES Abroad received the prestigious Quality Improvement Program (QUIP) designation from The Forum on Education Abroad for meeting the highest standards for study abroad programming and evaluation in the nation.

LifeStorage River North-chicago
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 29, 2011
LifeStorage, Chicago self storage provider for home and business, is excited to announce the purchase of a new property in the Chicago River North area. “LifeStorage is always looking at opportunities to expand when and where it makes sense. We’re situated with a healthy market position, an excellent product, and are constantly searching for ways to bring our brand to new customers. Once the facility is renovated and repurposed, we feel area residents and business owners will really see the LifeStorage difference, ” says Barry.
The new location is a seven-story loft building that will offer the ultimate upscale solution for not only self-storage, but also business needs. Jook Joint (Full Effect Dance Theatre) (11/31 North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie)

Now in its eighth year, the Choreographer of the Year award is presented annually to the choreographer who represents the highest artistic level of choreography during the month-long Dance Chicago festival, gains favorable responses from the audiences or press, and distinguishes themselves as a new and significant face in Chicago choreography.
