When considering where they’re going to live in their post-retirement years, many homeowners with paid-off mortgages may incorrectly assume that it’s less expensive to stay put than move into a senior living option like a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). This represents one of five senior-living myths challenged in a new report by renowned gerontologist Ken Dychtwald Ph.D.
“The myth is that it’s less expensive and more financially secure for one to stay in their current home,” said Dychtwald, psychologist, gerontologist, best-selling author and CEO of Age Wave. “The reality is that, even though your mortgage may be paid off, monthly expenses to maintain your home and your lifestyle may be higher than you realize and less predictable as your home ages or you are less able to physically manage the home. When combined with potential care costs, living in your current home may end up being the most expensive option.”
Titled “Five Myths and Realities of Continuing Care Retirement Communities,” Age Wave’s report and supporting research were commissioned by Vi, a developer, owner and operator of older adult living communities.
According to the report there are several misconceptions that can lead people to miscalculate the costs of living in their current home versus the costs of living in a senior living option like a CCRC.
People think it’s inexpensive to stay in their current home, but a side-by-side comparison of the costs of living in a CCRC to the costs of living in your current home may reveal many surprises.
The report provides a list of typical expenses – mortgage/rent/assessments, property tax, homeowners insurance, food, utilities, housekeeping, lawn/garden care, maintenance/repairs, health club memberships, entertainment/activities – most of which are included in the CCRC monthly fee.
“When you take the time to calculate what you now spend in your current home, you may find your expenses greater than the total cost of living in a CCRC,” Dychtwald said.
The report also finds that many believe they’ll be able to pay for long-term care, if and when it’s needed.
“Without any plan, paying for the costs of long-term care can be financially devastating,” he said. “Many people still don’t realize that many of these costs are not covered by Medicare. And while long-term care insurance can be a wise investment, even this type of insurance does not always cover all costs.”
According to the report, the monthly fees at a CCRC often include fees for assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing care, should they ever be needed.
“Clearly, when considering where to live in your post-retirement years, it’s worth looking at all the options available and comparing the real costs,” Dychtwald, said.
CCRCs offer independent living with a combination of a private residence, services, amenities and care (for example, assisted living, memory support care and skilled nursing care).

MaryBennett.org The Theurer-Wrigley House, more commonly known as the Wrigley Mansion, at 2466 N Lakeview is currently for sale for .5 million, though not listed in the MLS. The home is a Chicago landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Earlier today I had an opportunity to take a video tour of the home with one of the owner’s adult children, who has an intimate familiarity with the home’s history and details — and the experience of living in one of Chicago’s grandest homes and most attractive locations. The home and its coach house span more than 16000 square feet. It is, to quote an architect who was touring the home at the time I was there, “exquisite. One of the finest single-family homes in Chicago, untouched, with its original details. Priceless.” This video, despite its length, shows less than half of the home and doesn’t include a visit to the coach house. My tour was arranged by Koenig & Strey’s Mary Bennett, who has the listing.
sergioandbanks.com New homes and condos by chicago-based builder Noah Properties have been generating a lot of buzz. Noah’s been able to take advantage of sharply lower land prices to price aggressively against resale units. Noah’s homes come loaded up with practical and stylish extras that buyers hesitated to pay for in the super-heated market of several years back. The combination of competitive prices and over-the-top finishes has resulted in rapid sales in the current sluggish market. One of Noah’s current projects is a 5-unit condo at 2521 N Ashland Ave in Lincoln Park, just around the corner from the popular Wrightwood Park. The development includes two duplex 4-bedroom, 3-bath units (both already sold), an unusual top-level 2000 square foot unit with a private roofdeck on the same level, and 2 3-bedroom, 2-bath simplex units, priced at 9900. Sergio & Banks’ Izabela Sloma has represented a number of Noah Properties’ developments and is our tour guide in this sponsored video. Video Rating: 5 / 5
A little boy suffers third-degree burns when a pot of boiling water tips over on him. Doctors immediately sedate him, spend weeks treating his wounds and send the toddler home.
Now his mother can’t get him to go in the kitchen or bathe. Sometimes he’s afraid to go outside. Everything reminds the boy of his painful burns.
This is the psychological impact of medical trauma and the focus of an April 20 comprehensive conference hosted by La Rabida Children’s Hospital.
The joint conference, Perspectives in Care: Medical Trauma in Childhood, will be held at the Tinley Park Convention Center for health care professionals, including nurses, educators and others seeking to learn more about the consequences of significant medical events and strategies to improve the quality of care for children who have latent issues.
Experts define medical trauma as a child’s or family’s experience of scary, painful, and/or highly distressing medical events and their responses to them. Registration is now open for the daylong conference.
Judith Simon Prager, Ph.D., is one of eight presenters who will address varying aspects of psychological trauma resulting from medical events. Prager will present Verbal First Aid as the keynote speaker.
Liz Jazwiec, R.N., winner of the American Journal of Nursing 2010 Book of the Year Award, is the closing keynote speaker. Yippee! Another Day in Paradise . . . Driving Negativity out of the Workplace will help participants create positivity at work.
La Rabida’s Brad Stolbach, Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert on post traumatic stress syndrome disorder (PTSD), will discuss the nuisances of treatment strategies in So What is Trauma-Informed Care Anyway and How Do Know if I’m Providing It?
Ruby Roy, M.D. and Lindsay Amper, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, will also address psychosocial and medical issues related to trauma.
A nursing track of the conference will include presenters Melissa Alderfer, Ph.D., the Cancer Center of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and La Rabida’s Rose Briars, N.D., PNP-BC, CDE.
Amper said the overall goal of the conference is to highlight a new field of study in the worlds of psychology and medicine, as well has helping children heal – inside and out.
“A child who has a burn is constantly reminded of trauma to their skin,’’ she said. “We try to establish a sense of safety and let them know you’ll never lose the memory, but down the line, the memory won’t be so filled with emotion and trauma. It will just be a memory.”
Learner objectives have been developed for each session and are available at La Rabida Trauma Conference. Objectives also will be listed in the registration materials on the day of the event. Success will be achieved through completed evaluation tools and attendance sign-in sheets.
Register at http://www.larabidamedicaltrauma.eventbrite.com and use promotional discount code “earlybird” before March 15. After March 15, the fee is $ 160.
