I&#039;ve heard that the &quot;scribble&quot; is so birds don&#039;t fly into the webs and ruin them, but that may just be a myth. They&#039;re harmless, just large and terrifying to arachnophobes. But if the body and legs are black, the stripes on the abodomen are yellow/green, and the web has a small area where there is more webbing and it looks like a name is stitched in it, then it more than likely is a garden spider.  There&#039;s a legend about the garden spider&#039;s web, too.
