  • Chicago’s Notorious Cabrini Green Housing Project- Whats Left As Of 9-15-10.

Posted by admin on February 28th, 2012 and filed under Chicago Homes | 13 Comments »

Here’s an update of the Cabrini video I made earlier in the Summer. 1230 North Larabee “The Himilaya” is in the process of being demolished while 1230 North Burling “Scamplife” is still occupied. The two remaining red buildings are still occupied and standing, but I didn’t visit them today. Since I was at Cabrini Green, I thought it would be appropriate to show you my new car, a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The car came from the Missouri State Police and is currently my every day driver. Improvements I’ve done since I bought it not in the video are adding trim to the front doors and concealing scanner antenna wires. I’ve also added a high quality sound system and other interior improvements. Near the end, we hear a shout out from some of the remaining residents at Cabrini, who asked if they could be in my video. Chicago’s Wrigley Mansion, living in an iconic landmark

Posted by admin on February 10th, 2012 and filed under Chicago Homes | 3 Comments »

MaryBennett.org The Theurer-Wrigley House, more commonly known as the Wrigley Mansion, at 2466 N Lakeview is currently for sale for .5 million, though not listed in the MLS. The home is a Chicago landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Earlier today I had an opportunity to take a video tour of the home with one of the owner’s adult children, who has an intimate familiarity with the home’s history and details — and the experience of living in one of Chicago’s grandest homes and most attractive locations. The home and its coach house span more than 16000 square feet. It is, to quote an architect who was touring the home at the time I was there, “exquisite. One of the finest single-family homes in Chicago, untouched, with its original details. Priceless.” This video, despite its length, shows less than half of the home and doesn’t include a visit to the coach house. My tour was arranged by Koenig & Strey’s Mary Bennett, who has the listing.

sergioandbanks.com New homes and condos by chicago-based builder Noah Properties have been generating a lot of buzz. Noah’s been able to take advantage of sharply lower land prices to price aggressively against resale units. Noah’s homes come loaded up with practical and stylish extras that buyers hesitated to pay for in the super-heated market of several years back. The combination of competitive prices and over-the-top finishes has resulted in rapid sales in the current sluggish market. One of Noah’s current projects is a 5-unit condo at 2521 N Ashland Ave in Lincoln Park, just around the corner from the popular Wrightwood Park. The development includes two duplex 4-bedroom, 3-bath units (both already sold), an unusual top-level 2000 square foot unit with a private roofdeck on the same level, and 2 3-bedroom, 2-bath simplex units, priced at 9900. Sergio & Banks’ Izabela Sloma has represented a number of Noah Properties’ developments and is our tour guide in this sponsored video.

This tragedy is echoed by similar problems in Ohio, Michigan and other subprime targets on the West Coast, Nevada, and in the South. Although some examples aren’t as stark or depressing, the general idea of plummeting property values and vacant properties infecting a neighborhood and its surrounding areas still stands. Affected states have to carry the burden of these paralyzed limbs, and banks and their cronies that perpetrated this mess just walk away. Since 2007, Chicago’s Englewood and West Englewood areas slid into a sinkhole. Homes that once housed lower middle class and middle class families stand empty. Those with the means to move have fled. Those without the means have stayed while the prairie reclaims a large part of the south side of Chicago. More and more homes have been boarded up. Grass has grown so high in some formerly residential areas it obscures all but the tallest humans. Crime soared. Property values in surrounding neighborhoods are plummeting as the wasteland spreads to their doorsteps.

North Lawndale, Chicago Apartments ? The Polish Culture in Chicago’s West side Neighborhood

Posted by admin on March 23rd, 2011 and filed under Chicago Apartments | No Comments »

Before you delve into what Chicago has to offer, perhaps some information about its neighboring areas will help paint a clearer picture. Chicago has many influences, but none is stronger than the Polish. The neighborhood of North Lawndale has a long history of Polish immigration. The result is a culturally rich neighborhood with beautiful homes and tree-lined streets. If you are considering a move to the Chicago area, North Lawndale is a fine choice.

Once part of Cicero Township in 1869, the eastern section of North Lawndale to Crawford Avenue (Pulaski Road) was annexed to Chicago by an act of the state legislature, later streets were platted and drainage ditches were installed between Western and Crawford Avenue. Millard and Decker, a real estate firm that subdivided the area in 1870, supplied the name ÒLawndaleÓ. In 1871, after the fire, the McCormick Reaper Company (later International Harvester) occupied a new large plant in the South Lawndale neighborhood. As a result, many plant workers moved to eastern North Lawndale. The remaining area west of Crawford Avenue was annexed by a resolution of the Cook County Commissioners in 1889.

In 1892 the Bohemian Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes was established at the corner of 15th & Keeler, and in 1909 the Czech Freethinkers School Frantisek Palacky was built at 1525 S. Kedvale. The Czech immigrants that settled there termed the Merigold Novy Tabor (New Camp). The ultimate Czech institution to come to North Lawndale in 1912 was the Ceska Beseda (Bohemian Club) at 3659 W. Douglas Blvd. chicago‘s Czech elite, as well as the visiting Czech elite of the rest of the United States and Czechoslovakia attended this club.

This was the place for its refined members to celebrate and enjoy literature, drama, and music by the most celebrated and talented Czech artists. The Bohemians spread throughout the rest of the North Lawndale neighborhood and were the original owners of many of the beautiful graystone buildings that graced the picturesque streets of the neighborhood. Many of the elite members of the Bohemian community resided in the vicinity of the 1800 & 1900 blocks of S. Millard Ave.
