Spanning most of the twentieth century, Another Way Home celebrates the special circumstance of being born and reared in a household where being a woman of mixed race could be a fundamental source of strength, vitality, and courage. Ronne Hartfield begins her chronicle with the early life of her mother, Day Shepherd. Born to a wealthy British plantation owner and the mixed-race daughter of a former slave, Day negotiates the complicated circumstances of plantation life in the border country of Louisiana and Mississippi and, as she enters womanhood, the quadroon and octoroon societies of New Orleans. Equally a tale of the Great Migration, Another Way Home traces Day’s journey to Bronzeville, the epicenter of black Chicago during the first half of the twentieth century. Here, through the eyes of Day and, ultimately, her daughter, we witness the bustling city streets and vibrant middle-class culture of this iconic black neighborhood. We also relive crucial moments in African American history as they are experienced by the author’s family and others in chicago‘s South Side black community, from the race riots of 1919 and the Great Depression to the murder of Emmett Till and the dawn of the civil rights movement.
Throughout her book, Hartfield portrays mixed-race Americans navigating the challenges of their lives with resilience and grace, making Another Way Home an intimate and compelling encounter with one family’s response to our racially charged culture.
“A warm and touching memoir of a close-knit family as well as a record of the tumultuous history of race relations in the U.S.”—Booklist

CovenantCare at Home Helps 99-Year-Old Woman Stay Out of the Hospital; Home health care could save $ 17 billion annually in hospital readmissions Medicare costs
Hildred is 99 years old; like most people her age, she has medical conditions. Arthritis, hypertension, macular degeneration, hyperthyroidism and the most critical, congestive heart failure (CHF).
But when you visit her, you’d never know it. She fills her bird feeders outside her beautiful apartment in Windsor Park, a Covenant Retirement Community and takes daily walks around the grounds. She writes poetry, creates artwork that adorns her walls, is still active in the book club she started, and has lunch and dinner with friends.
She doesn’t look, or act, her age; more like someone at least 20 years younger.
What has kept Hildred from being admitted to the hospital, where the average Medicare cost of treating CHF is $ 20,000, is a small care team – her daughter, a doctor who didn’t just “automatically” admit her when her CHF symptoms worsened, and a nurse and nursing aide who manage and monitor her medications and overall health conditions every day. Her home care typically costs $ 152 per week.
If everyone had care like this, Medicare estimates its savings from hospital readmissions alone would be $ 17 billion annually. In fact, it is now rolling out a national program that will support better communication among aftercare providers and, starting next year, penalizing hospitals that underperform on hospital readmission rates. (See related fact sheet: http://www.covenantcareathome.org/resources-news/press-releases/home-health-care-a-cost-savings-solution-for-medicare-senior-rehospitalizations/)
“I think I’ve done it myself,” says Hildred, the very independent former teacher, mother of two, grandmother of four and great grandmother of five, when first asked how she’s been able to stay out of the hospital. But then, she admits, “Well, I have to give the nurses some credit. If there is anything wrong, they’re onto it immediately. They come to my apartment every day and also call me. They have been very good in keeping a relationship with how I’m feeling and noticing things that may need attention.”
CHF is a chronic illness, one of three leading causes of hospitalization among the elderly. “It goes from stabilized to recurrence of symptoms very rapidly,” explains her registered nurse, Rosann Forni of CovenantCare at Home.
In April, Rosann noticed that Hildred had shortness of breath, swelling in her legs, fluid retention and changes in her blood pressure. She immediately contacted Hildred’s daughter Carol, who lives an hour’s drive away, and then her physician, Dr. Kenneth Ha.
“When she came in, I suspected CHF and confirmed that,” explained Dr. Ha. “We could either admit her to the hospital or try to treat her as an outpatient. In cases like this, hospitals can be almost counterproductive at times. For the geriatric population, there can be issues with increased confusion of the patient, and a prolonged stay can lead to physical problems and the risk of infection. So, initially I decided to treat her with medications.”
Dr. Ha said that having home health care was ideal for Hildred’s situation. “For the next month or two, there was a good amount of going back and forth” with Rosann, adjusting Hildred’s medications and monitoring her conditions every day.
In fact, says Dr. Ha, “Medication monitoring is huge in treating the geriatric population. At first, patients are resistant to having help because they want to retain their independence. The first step is getting them to realize that they need someone to help them. Otherwise they’ll say, ‘I’ll take care of myself now; I’m not going to pick up the phone and call you.’ But they could be very sick.”
Dr. Ha relies on home health care to monitor his patients. “I just feel like it’s almost impossible to deal with elderly patients the way you should without it. Rosann is my eyes when I can’t be there,” he said.
Hildred’s CHF is in remission now. This has enabled her to stay in her Windsor Park apartment, where she has lived for 22 years. “Of course, you want to stay in your own home,” she says. And, countless studies show that the elderly recover faster and enjoy a better quality of life if they are able to stay at home.
“It is a wonderful life here at Windsor,” she concludes.
One that her healthcare team is committed to maintain.

When it comes to getting the best information on the web about construction, home expansion, and steel and metal buildings it can be difficult to find trusted information combined with an easy tool to get the best price. With the emergence of “content farms” that produce content by writers who are not experts, the web contains little information that is useful for someone trying to learn about home improvement. The result for the do-it-yourself’er is watered down articles based on little more than a personal opinion, and a world wide web full of useless, often incorrect, misleading information about building quality structures that add value to your home.
A newly-launched website, BuildingsGuide.com, understands the frustration of both the do-it-yourself’er who loves the challenge of adding value to their home or business, and the contractor searching for the best resources and prices on steel or metal structures, to ensure they can create a profitable business.
BuildingsGuide.com has created a wide variety of buying guides, resources, pricing tools, and in-depth articles that will help both the consumer and business owner with their buying decisions. They have created resources about metal building kits, and guides about a wide variety of steel buildings such as those for home & hobby enthusiasts, agriculture farms, commercial and industrial facilities, or community based structures such as churches, fire stations, recreation centers and schools.
Couple the resources they offer with free steel building quotes from multiple suppliers, and it becomes a valuable resource for anyone who is thinking of adding value to their home.
RE/MAX Reports Home Sales Activity in Metro Chicago Real Estate Market Rose 19.3% in the Third Quarter after Posting 12.6% Gain in September
Elgin, IL (PRWEB) October 21, 2011
Home sales in the seven-county metropolitan Chicago real estate market continued their third-quarter surge in September. RE/MAX reports that home sales for the month were 12.6 percent higher than in the same period of 2010, while sales for the full third quarter of 2011 were up 19.3 percent from the same period last year, based on an analysis of sales reported by Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC (MRED).
Sales of detached homes rose 11.1 percent in September, and the median sales price was $ 175,000, a reduction of 6.8 percent from the median of $ 187,750 achieved in September 2010.
In the category of attached homes (primarily condominium apartments and townhomes) sales were 15.4 percent higher than the same month last year. The median sales price was $ 133,000, representing a decline of 14.7 percent since September 2010.
The average time required to sell a detached home rose six days to 158 days, while the average market time for those attached units that changed hands was 184 days, an 11 day increase from September 2010.
For the full third quarter, the RE/MAX analysis shows that sales of detached homes rose 18.4 percent to 12,927 units, and sales of attached homes rose 21.1 percent to 6,879 units.
The median price of detached homes slipped 5 percent for the quarter to $ 190,000, compared to a median of $ 200,000 in the third quarter of 2010. The market for attached homes saw a greater downward trend, with the median price falling 15 percent to $ 142,000 from $ 167,000 a year earlier.
The average market time for homes sold during the third quarter was 166 days, 10 days longer than during the same period in 2010. Market time is the period between the date a home is listed for sale and the date it goes under contract.
Distressed properties, a category that includes foreclosed homes and short sales, represented 7,277 or 36.7 percent of all homes sold in the metro area during the third quarter, down from 39.4 percent a year earlier. In September alone, distressed properties accounted for 39.7 percent of the total or 2,378 sales, down from 42.6 percent during the same month in 2010.
Individual Counties.
All seven counties in the metro area registered third-quarter increases in home sales activity compared to 2010. In five counties, the increase in sales for the quarter exceeded the metro-area average. Sales activity for the quarter increased 37 percent in DuPage County to 2,486 units; 27.3 percent in Kane County to 1,469 units; 30.8 percent in Kendall County to 459 units; 25.5 percent in Lake County to 1,917 units and 32.5 percent in McHenry County to 840 units.
Cook and Will counties experienced increases in sales activity somewhat below that of the metro area as a whole. Cook County sales totaled 10,988 units, a 13 percent increase, and they represented 55.5 percent of all sales in the seven-county area. Sales in the City of chicago rose just 9.2 percent for the quarter to 5,107 units. In Will County, 1,643 units changed hands, yielding a 17.8 percent increase.
In contrast to its below average increase in transactions, Cook County delivered the best results in terms of the change in its median home price. The county had a third quarter median price of $ 172,000, 4.4 percent lower than during the same period a year ago, and the City of Chicago saw the median home price increase 2.5 percent to $ 194,800.
Below are third-quarter median prices of all seven counties and the percent change from the same period in 2010:
Cook: $ 172,000 -4.4 percent
DuPage: $ 212,500 -10.7 percent
Kane: $ 150,000 -12.8 percent
Kendall: $ 151,000 -11.2 percent
Lake: $ 200,000 -7.6 percent
McHenry: $ 155,000 -12.4 percent
Will: $ 164,000 -11.4 percent
Year-to-Date Activity
Homes sales through the first nine months of 2011 in the metro area have totaled 52,672, which is 4 percent lower than during the same nine months of last year. However, the third quarter increase in sales activity suggests that by year-end, 2011 is likely to generate total sales exceeding those of 2010, according to Laura Ortoleva, a spokesperson for RE/MAX in the Northern Illinois region.
RE/MAX has been the leader in the northern Illinois real estate market since 1989. The RE/MAX Northern Illinois network consists of 2,200 sales associates and 105 individually owned and operated RE/MAX offices that provide a full range of brokerage services throughout the northern one-third of Illinois.
