24 April 1992 The first game of the 1992 playoffs. This was Miami’s first playoff experience and they were determined to make some noise. They started the game with a lot of energy and looked very promising. But that was until Jordan decided to take over. It was total domination. After three quarters Jordan had 42/8/6 with some steals and a block. The Bulls having a comfortable lead, he shot only three times in the final quarter. Finished with 46/11/9/3stl/1 blk on 21/34 shooting. Went to the line only 4 times. Hoops has the third game of this series where Jordan scores 56 in Miami. Post game notes & quotes ======================== CHICAGO (AP) — These are the playoffs, also known as Michael Jordan time. “I told you this is what I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been excited all week. This is fun time,” Jordan said Friday night after scoring 46 points as chicago began defense of its NBA championship with a 113-94 victory over Miami. Showing no ill effects from the back spasms that bothered him earlier in the week, Jordan scored 15 points in the second quarter when the Bulls went ahead to stay, and 15 more in the third quarter when they pulled away to an 87-73 lead. Jordan also had 11 rebounds and nine assists. “He was keyed up, this is his special time of the season,” coach Phil Jackson said. “He was anxious to get started and he made a great statement.” Jackson blamed the Bulls’ slow start on being “very nervous — no, very anxious.” “The suspense of the playoffs was laboring …
Guarding Michael Jordan during a playoff game intimidates some players. It inspired John Starks. Crushing Chicago’s spirit with his 3-point shooting and giving Jordan fits with his defense, Starks led New York to a 98-90 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference championship series yesterday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. It was a significant victory for the Knicks, who were determined not to lose the home-court advantage they had worked all season to attain. They won their 26th consecutive home game using the same formula that has worked all season — suffocating defense, dominating rebounding and timely shooting. Jordan (27 points) shot a dismal 10 for 27 from the field, including 2 for 9 during the final period, the time when Jordan usually dominates. It was also a significant defeat for chicago, which had won seven straight playoff games this season. Starks (25 points) was magnificent, setting a Knick playoff record by making five 3-point shots. Three of them came during a five-minute fourth-quarter barrage that helped the Knicks build an 88-79 lead with four minutes to play, a lead they never lost. Everyone expected the Starks-versus-Jordan battle to be a major factor in the series. Round 1 went to Starks. “I don’t even remember when Starks was in the CBA, and I don’t remember when he first came into the league,” said Jordan, referring to the minor league Continental Basketball Association. “But I know he’s here now.” And Starks had plenty of help. In a city that fully believes a championship parade permit is nothing more than paperwork with a date to be filled in, the Chicago Bulls took a loud, convincing step toward the NBA finals tonight. They overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat Orlando, 93-88, and take a 2-0 lead in the four-of-seven-game Eastern Conference finals. With a pressing defensive effort that was disciplined and ferocious all at once, the Bulls added one more remarkable achievement to a record-breaking season. In tonight’s magic act, the Bulls made a dominant player disappear. Shaquille O’Neal was held to 10 points and 5 rebounds in the second half, including a meaningless dunk with 5 seconds to play, after powering his way to 26 points and 11 rebounds before halftime. Surprised by chicago double-teams in the second half, and handicapped by a backcourt that was prevented from getting him the ball nearly enough down the stretch, O’Neal produced only three shots in the fourth quarter. He made all three, but he could not make enough. Michael Jordan scored 35 points (on 9-for-21 shooting, along with 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and a block), 25 in the second half, after a 3-for-10 first-half effort that made his pre-game acceptance of the league’s most valuable player award seem like a cruel joke. But Jordan’s defensive play was just as decisive on a night when he was forced to deal with cramps in the final minutes. “It’s a crucial time of the game,” Jordan said. “What am I supposed to do …
Before a deafening crowd of 18676 fans at chicago Stadium, the Bulls defeated the Pistons, 94-83, in the opening game of the four-of-seven-game Eastern Conference championship series. Jordan, whose election as the league’s most valuable player will be announced Monday, was held to 22 points, 9 points below his playoff average, on 6-for-15 shooting along with three boards, three steals and six assists. But Jordan’s teammates stepped forward — the Bulls’ bench combined for 30 points and starters Scottie Pippen (18 points), Bill Cartwright (16 points) and Horace Grant (10 rebounds) stood up to Detroit’s physical play, holding off the Pistons whenever they threatened to take control. “I had a bad game, but we still won,” Jordan said afterward. “I think that shows the maturity of our team. I think this shows them that we’ve got a team, instead of a one-man situation.” Today’s game set the tone for the remainder of the series. There was very little open-court play, and there were very few scintillating offensive moves. This series will be physical. Bodies will fly. Tempers will flare. Skin will bleed. Character will be tested. There were times away from the ball when the action resembled a rugby scrum. Players shoved, held and did whatever else they felt they could get away with. “It’s a different style of ball when you play us,” said Mark Aguirre, who led the Pistons with 25 points. “They’re not going to be able to play us like Philly, where they got a lot of running and …
Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan led a first-half assault as the chicago Bulls put together their best game of the playoffs, trouncing the Indiana Pacers, 106-87, in Game Five to regain control of the Eastern Conference finals. Pippen, who missed two crucial free throws at the end of Game Four, scored 17 of his 20 points in an outstanding all-around first half. He shot 7-of-12 from the field and again smothered Pacers point guard Mark Jackson, who managed five points. “Dealing with Monday night’s loss was very tough for me personally,” said Pippen, who had been shotting less than 40 percent from the field and under 50 percent from the line in the series. “I wanted to go and attack the basket tonight, use all the energy I had, to make up for the mistakes I made on Monday.” Jordan, who missed a three-pointer at the buzzer in Game Four and joined coach Phil Jackson in criticizing the referees afterwards, also scored 17 first-half points. He shot 12-of-20 from the field and finished with 29 points. “We came out tonight with something to prove,” Jordan said. “We decided to be the aggressors. Scottie and I had good energy going toward the basket and we were able to make it happen.” “I did not emphasize that in practice,” Jackson said. “I did not say that you have to go to the basket or that we have to go to the basket. But our players knew what they didn’t do in the previous two games. Scottie and Michael took it upon themselves to prove a point today.” Consecutive three …
